Why You Should Walk After Meals

Ayurveda has a practice called Shatapavali, which literally means, “100 steps.”  Walking slowly after a meal promotes good digestion and assimilation. The recommendation is for walking a minimum of 100 steps after each meal. I notice I feel really great after taking a walk, particularly after lunch, which is my main meal.

First, Ayurveda suggests resting for ten minutes, preferably laying on your left side, which promotes digestion. Your stomach is on your left side and this keeps the food in the upper stomach, promoting good blood supply, the flow of bile into the stomach and good digestion while reducing acidity. This is short rest is not a nap. Napping after meals does not have the same benefits.  Ayurveda considers sleeping after a meal detrimental.

Practice your post-meal walk slowly and mindfully. Walking after a meal is no time for a powerwalk. Shatapavali increases digestion, reduces gas, burns fat more efficiently and balances blood sugar. Plus, you are getting time outside in nature which is relaxing and grounding. Try this simple practice and you will quickly see the results.
