SPRING BALANCE with AYURVEDA

Spring is Kapha season, which is a combination of Water & Earth elements. Kapha’s seat is in the lungs. Early Spring is the time to shed the stagnancy of winter. In winter we tend to eat fattier and heavier foods and we tend to be less active. This helps us stay warm during the cold months. During this time, Kapha is in a solid state. Just like the winter snow melts as the weather gets warm, so does Kapha in our bodies. This can lead up to excess liquefied Kapha in the Spring. This may show up as mucus or congestion. This is why Spring colds, viruses and allergies are common.

Spring is the time to release any toxins that have built up during the winter. We can help this along by eating lighter foods and doing a spring cleanse. Eat what foods are naturally growing, like bitter spring greens to cleanse your liver. We can also release excess Kapha by doing poses and yogic breathing that opens our lungs. Backbends and twists are excellent Springtime poses. Try going for a brisk walk to get your body moving and breath in that crisp early Spring air.

What can we do?

  • Improve Agni by avoiding FLUNC: Frozen, left-over, uncooked, nuked and canned foods.

  • Add digestive spices to simple well-cooked meals. Try: ginger, cumin, coriander, galangal ginger, turmeric and black pepper.

  • Avoid foods that are cold, slimy and heavy, such as dairy.

  • Drink warm boiled ginger-water. (Boil a whole pot of water for 5 minutes uncovered, add a pinch of ginger and drink warm throughout the day.)

  • Dry up excess Kapha and keep things moving by taking Triphala before bed.

  • Tulsi tea is great for the lungs.

  • Try The Breath of Joy video to help open your lungs and release winter stagnancy.

Note: It you are on any medications please consult with a professional before taking any herbs.

 For Spring Allergies Try
